I’ve XC skiied and mountain biked here for over 25 years. The ski route is mainly on double-track – you can try the singletrack but it’s very tight with a lot of elevation changes. The Good – scenic and usually peaceful. I’ve gone hours without seeing anyone else. Starting to return to pre-Covid visits. Double-track is easy to follow and sign posts are fairly frequent – at least at every major intersection. Sign posts face North so you can easily tell which direction you’re facing. Best time to ski here is after a fresh snowfall – especially if you can lay the first tracks.
The Bad – hikers deliberately destroy the ski tracks. TRCA has posted signs advising hikers and snowshoers to stay off the ski tracks and stick to one side. I’ve laid tracks first thing in the morning and come back to see hikers have wiped them out. I’ve also come across hikers deliberately walking through the ski tracks and destroying them. There are also many off-leash dogs here, despite signage that says dogs must be on a 6-foot leash. These people should all be charged with trespassing and banned from the property.
The Ugly – it’s no longer free to use these trails, despite our tax dollars paying for the land. Uxbridge is charging a parking fee (per day or annual) which has stopped many people from using these trails. Their system is flawed and rarely works at the main trailheads as it requires a data connection on your phone. Good thing it’s costing them money – hopefully this foolishness ends. The trails themselves are beautiful and a great workout. Lots of elevation with tough climbs and fast, flowy descents. Get in right after or during a snowfall and you’ll have a great time there.
